(JW) What Is The Kingdom of God? Part 1

The Watchtower Society tells it’s members that the Kingdom of God is his heavenly government and only the 144k (anointed) are included in this arrangement. Refer to the 2009 April Watchtower. I looked up the Greek word for “KINGDOM”  in the Watchtower’s 1988 “Insight” book (also E Sword) and found the word “basileia”. Here’s the definition of it below…

βασιλεία
basileia
Thayer Definition:
1) royal power, kingship, dominion, rule
1a) not to be confused with an actual kingdom but rather the right or authority to rule over a kingdom
1b) of the royal power of Jesus as the triumphant Messiah
1c) of the royal power and dignity conferred on Christians in the Messiah’s kingdom
2) a kingdom, the territory subject to the rule of a king
3) used in the N.T. to refer to the reign of the Messiah

As we can see from the definition above, “Kingdom” is also the TERRITORY that is “subject to the reign of a king”. I repeat, this word doesn’t only mean government/rule, but land and territory also. The Greek word for “GOVERNMENT” is “kuriotēs”. Here’s the definition below…

κυριότης
kuriotēs
Thayer Definition:
1) dominion, power, lordship
2) in the NT: one who possesses dominion

Strongs:
mastery, that is, (concretely and collectively) rulers: – dominion, government.

Here’s the problem with saying that the “Kingdom of God” is ONLY his government. The word government (kuriotēs) is NEVER used in the Greek where the word “KINGDOM” is mentioned! It’s always the word “basileia”, that is used in all of the 70+ times that the phrase (Kingdom/of God) shows up. I have cited a couple of scriptures below that say “Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets” will be IN THE KINGDOM OF GOD.  According to JW’s, the Old Testament saints won’t be in heaven but rather on earth, for eternity. Below are some scriptures that say otherwise.

Luke 13:28 “There is where [YOUR] weeping and the gnashing of [YOUR] teeth will be, when YOU see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but yourselves thrown outside.”

Matt 8:11“But I tell YOU that many from eastern parts and western parts will come and recline at the table with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of the heavens;”

According to this scripture below you have to be born again to SEE the Kingdom of God?!? Well, that’s what it says…

John 3:3 “In answer Jesus said to him: “Most truly I say to you, Unless anyone is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

(NOTE: ALL SCRIPTURES CITED ARE OF THE “NEW WORLD TRANSLATION”)

To hear a recent Bible study I had with a JW on this subject (a Ministerial Servant) CLICK HERE. I admit that I could have said some things clearer but I know that our study got to him. He hasn’t returned since though we had been meeting fairly consistently for over 10 months. The audio tells the story.

  1. The misunderstanding of the term kingdom in the New Testament is common in the churches in the west and seems to have been for some time.
Jesus himself explains this concept very well in his parable recorded in Luke 19:11 – 27. Many people, as well as some Bible translators, have misunderstood this parable to be about money usage but it is really about who rules – who has the right to reign.

    Good post. Keep writing.
